dotch77 on "RE: Dell goes netbook with the Inspiron Mini 9"

The Asus Eee PC 901 is more expensive, but I like the design better, plus it comes with a 6-cell battery and standard 1.3 MP webcam, bluetooth, 2 speakers and 12 or 20 GB SSD. I agree with Dell that SSD drives are a better choice for netbooks then traditional hard disk drives. See this article on netbookusers.com : http://www.netbookusers.com/smf/index.php?topic=42.0

I think I may have a virus. I launch the browser and it just clocks then times out. I go to CMD and ping various sites by their address or their IP Address and it is fine. The icon at bottom right says I have 100mps connection and my 2 laptops (wireless) work fine in the house. I ran spybot but it didn't find anything Malicious. Any suggestions?

samdutton on "RE: Google unveils Chrome web browser"

Maximised, Chrome looks like a desktop. I guess Google will aim to get Chrome built in to instant-on operating systems like Splashtop. Chrome will give Google a lot more scope to develop web applications and sooner or later I guess they'll release a Chrome-only application. Assuming Google's plan for world domination works out, Chrome will be like a 'runtime environment' and five years someone will have the bright idea of standalone applications that don't need to run in a browser!

iPhone 3G - Whiz and MobileMe Oh My

Apple held it's Worldwide Developers' Conference in San Francisco yesterday and unveiled the oft rumored and now official iPhone 3G with GPS alongside new price structures and a "push service for the rest of us" to mimic the effectiveness of Microsoft Exchange packaged as MobileMe.Over the course of several posts I will look to describe the myriad of new features and services unveiled at the first ever sold out WWDC starting with the software feature set of the new iPhone 2.0 software. As Jobs explained in his keynote address there were several key factors the folks in Cupertino were hoping to address in the new updated iPhone. These included:3G + GPSEnterprise SupportThird Party ApplicationsMore CountriesLower PriceThey have nailed them all down tight and then some.3G + GPSThe new 3G iPhone provides a faster data download rate (about 2.5 times faster) while preserving battery life - setting a new standard in both 3G content delivery speed (with iPhone being 36% faster than other popular smart phone devices) and allowing for up to 5 hours of 3G talk time on a charge. That nearly doubles the industry standard of just under 3 hours. The 3G iPhone also has built-in GPS which combined with Location Services in the SDK will allow developers to create incredibly rich location-based native applications for the iPhone 3G.Enterprise SupportThe iPhone 3G now includes support for Enterprise customers by tackling the following feature set:Push emailPush calendarPush contactsGlobal address listCisco IPsec VPNCertificates and IdentitiesWPA2 / 802.1xEnforced security policiesDevice configurationRemote wipeMore about these features in future posts.Third Party ApplicationsPerhaps the biggest story will be the full featured native application development via the App Store and the developer toolset Apple provides for iPhone development. This feature-rich intuitive platform unleashes incredible potential for an explosion of applications on the iPhone which I am eager to see released over the coming year. The current applications under development and set to release July 11 when the phones become available are mind blowing. From Monkey Ball (SEGA) to medical imaging applications the iPhone base OS is giving developers an unrivaled handheld platform for rich applications development.More CountriesThe iPhone 3G will be available in 70 countries. Current iPhones are available in only six. There are twenty five countries slated for rollout the day 3G becomes available: Australia Austria Belgium (French) Belgium (Dutch) Canada (English) Canada (French) Denmark Finland France Germany Hong Kong Ireland Italy Japan Mexico Netherlands New Zealand Norway Portugal Spain Sweden Switzerland (French) Switzerland (German) UK USA Lower Price$199 (say no more.)

Talk Announcement: MySQL and Search at Craigslist

I recently learned that my talk has been accepted for the 2009 MySQL Conference in Santa Clara, California. It is currently scheduled for Tuesday the 21st and titled MySQL and Search at Craigslist. Here's the abstract (which I've promised to expand upon soon): Millions of people search for things every day on craigslist: tickets, cars, garage sales, jobs, events, and so on. This talk will look at the recent evolution of database and search architecture at Craigslist, including performance, caching, partitioning, and other tweaks. We'll pay special attention to the unique challenges of doing this for a large data set that has an especially high churn rate (new posts, edits, and deletes). And we strive to do this using as little hardware and power as possible. If you're coming to the conference, drop by and harass me. :-) If you're not sure check out the full schedule--there's a lot of good stuff packed into the conference already and a lot of talks are still not even posted.
