I think I've managed to convince Dell to replace my second faulty (souped-up) Vostro 1710 with a Precision M6300. It looks like a no-brainer, as it is a more powerful system, but physically a lot less appealing (no key-pad, old-style CD-Rom, super heavy, etc). If anyone has any thoughts on this, I'd appreciate it. Sorry if it seems like a dumb questions. I'm a newbie.Thanks.

Using the 2.0 web gui and it is working fine.
I replaced the default sounds with a high quality free third party set mentioned here:

Thanks johnr for making it much easier to move in this direction. I too had been using various pbx distros and after going through the process of ferreting out bad hardware issues I was too weary(wary) about using the asterisk sources directly. I did often encounter the odd forum comment suggesting it, though, since it would allow me to really understand what is going on with Asterisk.
