I have a Gateway GTW 5228 that has some of the same symtoms except the on off button will not turn it off, I have to plug and unplug it from the back. The fan starts on high and stays on with the hard drive spinning and the cd/dvd spinning all non stop. The monitor will not turn on at all. I have tried a different monitor that I know works also a cd/dvd burner/player that I know works and they both do the same thing. The only way it can be shut off is by unplugin it, the on off button will only turn it on. I just read an artical that says that AMD 2 has a problem with SP3 and that by deleting intelppm.sys will clear some of the windows/amd problem. I can even get that far. I am begging to think the mo/bd is fried. One other thing I think I will try is to pull some of the memory out and but them back in one at a time to see if there are some bad memory chips. Any one have any other ideas they would be appreciated.

Alright so I have a brand new macbook and I installed windowsXP using bootcamp. Downloaded and installed Red Alert on windows and the game works fine all except one thing. Since the game is so old and my laptop is so new when I try to scroll the screen it goes wayyyy too fast. I have tried absolutely everything to get it to go slower, to no success. All the options are set to slow and there are no keyboard shortcuts for moving the screen in this game. I really want to play, but its essentially impossible to play when the scroll is so fast because I can only see the 4 corners of the map, anything in the middle gets skipped over. Any suggestions?

Actually capitalist it's nota solution at all since the time has past. The only thing that should be done now is to learn from it and try to prevent something similar from happening again. I know I've made mistakes where I should have known better and thought that nothing bad will happen to me, and it does happen and there is nobody to blame but myself. However 3 months worth of data from a company the size of Mozilla is quiet hefty.

Sounds like pure fun to me Josh. I have been itching for a convergence to build a new system myself. I had always imagined that i7 would be here by now. Given the kind of money you spent I believe I would have gone another way. I like the idea of the Veloraptor--that's a must, and the blueray. I think I would have gone with the i7 though and a dual ATI video card system. I would have paid special attention to high overclockability, especially in the CPU. I would use a single quad core cpu, probably the fastest nonExtreme i7. I would water cool everything but the drives--and possibly use a water chiller from an aquarium that would kick in at high loads, to boot. This can be a very quiet computer as it needs no fans, and I think it will be as fast as yours. I would have so much money left ove that I would probably splurg on things like very fast RAM that can handle overclocks with tight settings. Paying sales tax was just lazy, but I applaud your civic spirit. Something that is important to me is that I will be using many things from my old system and still be left with a very fuctional 2nd computer The consenses reached on Toms is that if you know what your doing, building your own will cost you one third less than a MAC of similiar capabilities. The only thing that MAC really has going for it is perception and their OS. And it seems that they have an on going problem with people who have hacked their latest OS and made it installable on some PCs in one click. And I think I heard something about Apple suing a company that made computers that would boot under legally owned copies of OSX. Personally I know that though I am more or less in the same boat as you, I can build a machine that is exactly what I want, or closer than MAC can get to it, for much less than it would cost me to buy off the shelf. Most people still in this day and age do not overclock their CPU. I have been doing this since the days when you had to use traces on the cpu--now all you do is make a few mouse clicks and with the right components you get a 30% boost in processor speed. My present computers FSB is 800, but I run it at 1140 on some apps and games--it really makes a huge difference. And I have been doing it four five years on this old PentiumIV with no down side. To talk about preformance computing on a budget and not considering overclocking, really doesn't make much sense to me. But then I have never burned up a CPU. I have heard that the Pentium i7 will be an unlocked piece. If this is true, it should prove to be highly overclockable and records will fall. But more importantly it will allow people with a little skill to reap a rich reward in megahertz, possibly gigahertz of free speed increase. Speed is Power.

Mmk. My boyfriend and recently moved in together. He brought his laptop with him. He has an HP Pavillion dv9035nr, which I suppose is coming up on about 2 years old now. In it, it has a Nvidia Geforce Go 7600. Not long ago, it apparently died on him. He was restoring some files or some such, he said, and the notebook wasn't plugged into the wall, and his battery died. The next time he tried restarting it, it had some odd graphic anomolies in the HP screen, and wouldn't get past the XP loading screen, which also showed the .. effect, I guess. It was a repeating pattern of four vertical dashed white lines over the images. Anywho.. It would get to the loading screen, and Blue Screen on him. Now, this laptop used to have XP Media Center on it. We installed XP Home over it, as it was all we had available at that point. It installed (after some trouble HDD issues) mostly without a hitch.. til we got it running. Had to install new sound drivers; piece of cake. Network drivers; not so easy, but not much of a pain. So here's the kicker. We take it online, and.. Webpages hitch. Like a game does that you don't have the RAM to be running. We try running World Of Warcraft, and it crashes, saying it can't 'read' the memory. And yes, it had it in quotes. Now, I'm pretty sure it's not a RAM issue so much as a video memory issue, so we went looking for drivers for his card. We found some. We found alot, actually. I must have tried installing 6 different kinds of drivers, all of which failed. The official Nvidia driver stood out though.. It even looked like it was going to install.... and halfway through.. <.< You guessed it, it blue-screened. We tried a few more times, getting the exact same results. We're at a loss here. The screen basically told us he didn't have a graphics card. Any opinions on what the cause of this may be? It's driving us mad. ;.; p.s. I'm pretty sure I left something out.. but I don't remember what. D:

Please help me with finding this missing file online to download.I have been told to uninstall aol completely then re-install, however, this does not fix this error and since I got this new computer about a week ago with Vista on it most of my programs wouldn't update but now won't load or work at all. How do I obtain an AOL VR cd? My employer and I have an agreement with AOL so I have to use this mostly as well as my mail is there. I am thinking it is a compatibility issue but also had difficulties with priveleges as "administrator". Please help! What a crock this Vista is!

ok so problem1.i reinstalled my computer with windows xp home edition, it starts up again after i deleted the partition and formatted, when it restarted it comes up with blue screen and error saying frame buffer driver not working and so now when scrolling or moving windows around it is really laggy and slow. problem 2. video controller (VGA compatable) will not install and after many attempts to try fix by looking at forums with solutions none has worked. problem 3. when trying to install my nvidia drivers, at 66% through the process it restarts the computer and messes it up. Or it works then when the computer is restarted it freezes on boot up with the NVIDEA COPYRIGHT and gets stuck on that. Wow, what happens when the feel-good rep sells the customer a Vista machine? Will they be there to deal with all the problems when the user gets it home? It's like buying a car from an American car company: wonderful in the showroom, a disaster on the road. I don't like the Mac OS UI at all but the Mac stores do have both ends, sales and service, very well covered. That would be the only way that Microsoft can make a real difference. But Windows gurus can only be a pale reflection of that due to the volume of sales and not controlling the hardware.

With all due respect to people who sit on their butts all daydownloading everything. I personally like to get out to the stores to see what's new, and I want that Hot new DVD or Blu-ray disc...packaging and all. I still have my HD DVD player and I'm finding discs at a great value. I sure there will be something to replace Blu-ray at some point, but they will have a phenominal run until that time. I have a family of four, and I can't hog the puter downloading stuff all day and I also enjoy the special features, and behind the scenes featureson the discs...you don't get all that in a download.

I am currently having trouble with my right shift key with the letter w - the w works, but I cannot use the right shift key and create W, I can only do so with the left shift key. All other letters work with the right shift key. Does anyone have any ideas what the issue is? And how it could be fixed, I tried to contact HP (I have a HP Pavillion dv9000 lap top) and they suggested to reinstall the keyboard drivers, it still doesn't work! :-( Thanks, any help is appreciated!

I'm currently tryin to reformat my cicero computer, which i have done numerous times in the past without a glitch. All of my high school friends text mostly with complete words and use a few texting verison of words spread here and there. I have noticed that when I go to leave a post-it note I have to remind myself not to write in texting verison. Ex: "Kim called for you." Texting version: "Kim called 4 u."

I was all Norton and feeling bogged down so I put Kaspersky Antivirus 6 on my new computer. I loved it and then 7.0 ruined the experience for me. But I digress. (maybe Kaspersky 2009 fixes it) I think that Symantec felt a shockwave when a very large portion of the market started paying twice as much for a security product that came from Russia(!). As a result (still my theory), they went back and did an effective redesign of Norton AV. While I have experienced the intall hell people are mentioning here, I'm strongly considering going back to Norton, but never for the Internet Security. My worst fear with an AntiVirus product is an email message getting lost in the pipeline that goes through the AV before entering my email client (Eudora currently) when the system hangs or crashes. I wish reviewers would check that out.

I lost the use of both arms in an accident many years ago and a combination of voice software and foot mouse has been the only way I am able to use the computer. Problems with the lower back have become chronic when using the product above which I tried about a year ago. Another solution is the Footmouse by Hunter digital which I have had better luck using. The biggest shortfall with the Hunter digital product is a lack of quality control andprice. It costs around $300 and I have had to purchase four replacements in the last four years. It's a small company which likely accounts for the lack of quality control but without the product, I would not be a participant in the information age. I do wish the manufacturer would improve the quality of the product but I have seen no change in design over the last four years.

Its truely a sad story. Of note, people should realize gaming magazines went through the same thing which is why I no longer read gaming magazines. Since many of the publishers paid for advertising in the gaming magazines, many of the reviews were "influenced". I don't trust reviews from websites either. The days of honest game reviews are long gone. As long as the publishers are paying for advertising for a review site or magazine, the review itself is always suspect for the games developed by those publishers and their competitors.

I have a customer's computer Gateway 5235E that has the same symptoms. It will not POST, and when I put a post card in it, I get an error 50, which looks mostly like hardware issues, video, and a couple of other, depending on the bios. I have reset the bios/mobo, I have eliminated one device at a time, until I have nothing connected but the CPU, moboand power supply. Tried new power supply, new video card. I am thinking this mobo or processor is fried. The really weird thing is, if you unplug it, or turn it off after not booting, sometimes it boots up like nothing happened. The issues with compatibility and conflicts between Security apps by all the software makers seems like a concern for all of us. For me, I just want one set of security that is adequate and run without issues. Seems like nobody has it. The testers tell me how great, powerful and all-protective a secuity suite is and then I find I am not protected against the security suite from doing something that costs me inconvenience. So if a comparatively problem free suite exists then the testers should find it and tell us who depend on PC for idiots.

I used to love Norton during the DOS days, but their windows versionswere too bloated.I found Kaspersky to be less intrusive (with some minor tweaking of the settings) and use Spysweeper while browsing. I find the combo to be very efficient and have not ever had a virus or mallware incident since.

Ive had the computer for 9 months and it was free with a non working cd rom drive. I networked it and loaded win xp on it from the cd rom of a networked computer and it was running fine. My wife complained of it being slow so i added an aditional 512 megs of ram and its faster. I got a NTDLR screen today and im screwed now as somehow there a password in the bios now and i cant get in to changeboot from network now! it does not have a floppy drive so i cant use the program provided by Compaq to reset the bios and flash them. I tried using a cd with the program and it only loads to floppy drive only and of corse i dont have a floppy on any of the other computers in the house! Be advised it has had a tendency to restart on its own untill i added the new ram. Who has a password that will work for the 2100 us so i can fix the booting options in my wifes POS?

Actually, I bet one could put togeather a Mac Pro for around that price. Just don't buy hard drives and RAM from Apple. Get the minimum of those two items, then buy the Xeon RAM and standard hard drives from elsewhere. You'll wind up with comparable prices from your own build, though maybe not as much fun! (Unless you want to run OS X legally... Which considering what's coming up in Snow Leopard in the way of optimizing ordinary apps for a many-core system you might well want to do.)

I have a mac pro 8 core 2 x quad core 3.2 ghz, 10 gigs, 2 x 500 gig SATA drives, Nvidia 8800 GT and it costed ~$5000. Of course I got a student discount which saved me $400. I also purchased the ram and drives online and avoided the high Apple price tag. I used to build my own systems and probably will again, however I will say that Apple is one complete computer OEM manufactuer who builds a very good 'PC' workstation and the up n up is that I can run OSX.

First off, I think a better comparison would be to a Lenovo ThinkStation D10 or HP xw8600, etc. Anyway, I just stopped by Apple.com. A Mac Pro with: - Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon - 4GB (4x1GB) RAM- 320GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s - 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s - NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB - One 16x SuperDrive Is $3899 before tax (shipping is free). So that's quite close to Josh's machine, but you don't get the Raptor disk, Blu-ray, or the Quadro FX. Yes, do you get Apple's nicely done interior and one warranty, but the Pro is not cheaper from what I can tell. Tax alone is going to be hundreds and then you need a Vistal Ultimate license. Also, regarding the video, the Quadro FX is "certified on all industry-leading CAD, DCC, and visualization applications" (say Nvidia) and it's a workstation graphics card so it makes sense why it was chosen over something else. Finally, I think a point can be made for upgradeability. In two or three years when you want to replace your video card and processors it's probably going to be easier on something you built yourself. Whether is just because you know it better or better, because everything inside is not custom tailored for the other parts, or just because you don't have to worry about any proprietary parts. Not to take sides or anything... I think it often makes sense to explore buying something from a manufacturer. It would certainly have saved some time!

Also remember that with a Mac Pro you get as i said a very nice peace of engineering (that you also don't get from Dell or HP by the way), it looks nice inside yes but it also provides a complex network of sensors that monitor the machine for reliability and performance, again two things important in workstations.

Wow, looks like I inadvertently started a Mac fanboy flamewar. Not intended. In any case, when I said "comparably" equipped, I kept it in quotes on purpose: for the components that were unavailable in the Apple when compared with my system, I tried to find other perks that would be of similar use. For example I added the RAID controller, since my system uses RAID. And the clock speeds of the Mac Pro were like .3 GHz faster. And then there are the differences between OS X and Windows Vista—in a lot of ways it's apples to oranges (no pun intended). Sal's right; there's probably a better comparison to be made between my system and another PC workstation, like a Lenovo for example. Either way, I think you'd be hard pressed to prove that it's universally cheaper to buy high-end, specialty equipment from a provider rather than building from scratch. Economies of scale work when there's scale. But when needs are more specialized (cough, 8 cores, cough), it's usually cheaper if you can squeeze by on your own. It's probably safe to say that a significant proportion of "content creators" are using Apple systems to do what they do, and I'm often asked why I do not use a Mac, especially given that I'm in the graphic design field. I want to note for the record that it's not a heated point of contention for me; I've always been on PCs, and I simply find that a lot of the things I need to accomplish are very easy for me to do on a PC. In the long run I think it saves me time; in the end I think it's not necessarily always about the speed or stunning good looks of one's computer, but the efficiency of one's overall workflow. And more often than not, level of comfort with software and interface are going to be a MUCH bigger factor on the amount of time that I save while working than say, bus speeds. As I had alluded to in the article, I had lived with my previous dual Xeon machine for five years, and it was terrific for 90% of that. Even when I transitioned over to the new, much faster box, I was extremely hesitant—even the exponentially faster equipment wouldn't have been able to make up for the "setup curve" (all the time it took to get the software installed and to get everything tweaked and customized to the point where I was comfortable working on it). I think it's easy to underestimate the human role in computing, and I wanted to highlight that to some degree in this article. It's all well and good to have the fastest, greatest hardware, sure. But it's always a matter of what you're doing with it, and how it suits you, and in that sense there are no absolutes. For some, Apples offer absolutely everything they need and more, and that's why Apple has their market share. But the user is the one who makes the biggest productivity difference in the long run.* *Except when rendering video or 3D. I cannot tell you how many times I've had to wait overnight for a project to be complete, while not being able to use the system in the interim due to its extreme CPU/RAM usage. @hakime: Come on, why you gotta insult my interior decorating? :) Seriously, you should see my previous computer. It was a warzone compared to this one. I'm actually quite proud that it look as clean as it does! But yeah, one of course gets all of the nifty, well-engineered bells and whistles when you buy from the pros; that's precisely what you're paying for. Also, let me point out that I intentionally made quite a big point in the article about what a masochistic process it is to build one's own machine—not only do you end up with the interior beauty of a rotting whale, but the system as a whole is unwarrantied and unsupported. It's a risky venture, and I acknowledge that in full. A big part of my struggle when planning this generation of my main workstation was to figure out whether I should build or buy. It was an epic decision for me, but as usual I stuck to my old habits and decided to build again. I'm totally glad I did, but it's not for everybody. And it's certainly not just an economic decision—it has to be for the love of doing it yourself, making your own mistakes, and yes, being criticized for your system's inferiority to the immaculate drops of pure enlightenment oozing from Cupertino.

I just upgraded to Norton 360 2, and my firefox exhibited the problems discussed above. I removed Firefox, while saving my preferences, re installed firefox, and everything seems to be OK. Foxmarks might have helped recreating my bookmarks. BTW, I needed to reinstall Norton a couple of times as well, the upgrade did not go smoothly on my XP machine.

Personally I believe it deserves to be tested. I will be waiting for the people who review these for a living first though before trying it on my test machine. I'm currently with a vendor who isn't in the top 5 of AV vendors - mainly because I'm aware that some virus creators use those vendors software to test their viruses for perfection. Generally though it's always good to have a second opinion type scan every so often. Just for the record I used to be with Norton - but when the license expired and I installed one from a completely different vendor I was amazed to see how many viruses detected which were unseen by Symantec. Plus it wasn't as if I didn't set Symantec to scan by itself every so often anyway.

Battery life should not be a large concern due to screen size since it uses e-ink display technology (which does not draw power except during page redraws). The screen is a flexible plastic, not rigid glass, so the biggest concern would be scratches not breakage.

I bought a Sidekick Slide for my daughter at Christmas 2007. Two to three months later the ‘hard reset' problem (well documented on the internet) started occurring. After experiencing the problem for a couple months, we eventually contacted T-Mobile for help. (Comment: I hesitate to use the word "help" and T-Mobile in the same sentence.) The customer service rep, who I could barely understand, first tried to sell me the $20 per month data plan claiming that would fix the phone reset problem. I told them the data plan had nothing to do with the phone resetting. Yes, the data plan would solve the issue of losing absolutely everything on the phone when it reset itself, but not the problem with it resetting for no rhyme or reason. After many, many minutes and much back-and-forth, the rep eventually agreed to send a replacement phone - a refurbished one. All this took place in June. After receiving the refurbished phone, we returned the defective one and began using the new one. Needless to day, the problem reappeared soon thereafter. This week my daughter was so frustrated with losing all her contacts when the phone reset itself and she asked me to call T-Mobile again. I dreaded it but I called T-Mobile again. Once again, I explained the problem with the hard reset to the customer service rep and once again she started trying to sell me a data plan for $20 per month. She actually told me the problem would not occur if I had the data plan. I told her that is false and deceptive advertising if you sell the Sidekick Slide knowing there will be problems if you don't buy the data plan. Her response was "Well, I hate to tell you this but lots of companies do it". My reply was "the Attorney General will be very interested in hearing this". I insisted on talking with a supervisor. She reluctantly agreed and put me on-hold for over half an hour before the supervisor finally answered. At first, the supervisor also tried to sell me a data plan but soon backed off when she realized I wasn't some sucker. I told her I wanted the phone replaced with either a Sidekick LX or 2008. She said they couldn't do that per policy but they could send me a replacement since it's still under warranty. She went on to say I would have to take the phone to a UPS store and have it sent to them. If we need/want a replacement phone in the meantime, we'll have to go to our local T-Mobile store and get a loaner. (They sent me a replacement phone first the last time it was replaced but according to the supervisor, they're not supposed to do that so she wouldn't.) Has anyone had any success in getting a defective Sidekick Slide replaced? If so, what is the "secret"? Is there a special number or a particular person/department I should talk to? BTW, I called Motorola this morning and they said send it to them and they will repair it since it's under warranty. Does anyone know if the repair will get rid of the ‘hard reset' problem? In reality, they tended to last much longer. Since then, it has been a downward trend. The original OmniBook 300 of the mid 1990s, with its ROM boot disk and optional SSD, was better than most moder laptops, but was never followed up. If competition really gives consumers what they want, then it is clear that battery life longer than the standard 4 hours is not very high on most people's list. Very few manufacturers even consider it. Hopefully this new range will push back the boundaries again and give some real choice.

Normal keyboards you just hold down the ALT, then type on the number pad the series for the ASCII char you want and then you lift your finger off the ALT key and the character appears (Alt+161=í). Not so with this one. It doesn't even work in certain text boxes (such as this one) or in other apps works only after hitting enter. VERY annoying! On of the major disadvantages of belt drives on a bike is the fact that belts tend to stretch. This makes them very ineeficient to use compared with chain drives. As such they are only suitable for short journeys on relatively flat terrain. I see nothing in either of the source articles to indicate that anything has been done about this. The main advantage of abelt drive is, presumably,that you don't need to oil it. As such, they are likely to appeal to short range urban riders who want a "clean" bike. However, this also requires hub brakes to stop brake pad dust, which can be a bigger problem that chain oil. Also, it requires mudguards (fenders) and probably a rear rack. As such, I am not surewho the Trek District would appeal to.

When I saw first saw this commercial, by accident when I switched to the opening NFL game on Thursday, I thought it was god awful. I later saw I had a lot of company in that feeling. However, having attempted to be a film and commercial actor, I can say that it is very difficult to act badly in the way Bill Gates does in this commercial. Jerry sounds so lousy because he's trying to act bad and he can't act at all but it's funny when he's trying to act well. It has long been the stuff of reviews of cult films that it is extraordinary difficult to have a commercial be so uniformly and evenly (if that's not redundant) bad from beginning to end. I noticed many besides me thought the "leather" reply was the highlight of the commercial and none of us have the slightest idea what it meant or what metaphor it could possibly represent in response to Jerry's question. Somehow I think Mac and Linux are being mentioned in there. I look forward to the "American Pie"-like analysis (the song, not the movie).

This is by far and away my favorite DDR game. it has quite simply put, the BEST playlist out there. More songs you know, more actual music videos from actual artists, and less of the endless remixes of paranoia and other DDR standby filler music. If the reason you buy a new DDR is to get new music, this is a MAJOR plus, not a detriment as this reviewer said, as the music wont' sound like EVERY OTHER SINGLE GAME you have. And it isn't patheticly sung remixes either, its the real voices of the artists, and often the real music videos. I don't think I'm alone in wanting familiar music to dance to either - after all there was that "dance factory" game (which, sadly, coudln't find a beat to save its life) - I play this game with friends and everyone I know thinks the music on thie DDR is the best collection they've put out yet. Best yet, to unlock the songs, all you have to do is play the game. No ridiculous stellar mission mode thigns necessary... just get out the game and play and the songs unlock.

For those saying RickGeek is an Intel fanboy, he used to get abuse before Core2Duo about being an AMD fanboy. He might go from extreme's but Rick often highlights things good for a ChipGeek to know. I'd still buy AMD systems, my laptops are always Intel but I don't see a real problem in buying AMD for a desktop and perhaps to help keep competition going I'd pick them over Intel if they offered similar price for performance systems. I did recently convince the director for the computer I work for to buy 65 Intel based PC's,onlybecause HP in Australiadidn't offer any AMD systems that competed with the Intel systems. Which is a shame. Even if AMD went belly up today, their complete systems still on sale would still be good to buy because even if they had a fault the supplier would be responsible for honoring the warranty.

The article fails to mention that belt-drive requires a completely new frame design. Normally, when one replaces a bicycle chain, the master-link must be removed, or a chain rivet extractor must be used to break the chain. It would be physically impossible to install a chain without disconnecting a link, looping the chain through, and reconnecting the link. Now let me ask this question: How Do You Find The Master Link On A Drive Belt? Drive Belts will require that one of the frame tubes (seat-stay) be held in place by a removable bolt.

Id sure like to know if those two PS's of yours worked on your friend's computer. Etiher you got "lucky" and bought a bad PS, or you have an intermittent problem that is going to plauge you and any technician that you send that thing to for a long, long time. If you can check it with your friend's PS again, and it works, try removing the PS and putting it back in again two or three times just to see if it keeps working. If it ever does fail, suspect the connectors of having cold solder joints, or wires as having hairline fractures. My best guess, at this point is going to be cold solder joints...that's assuming the PS you bought is actually good.

In electronics tech school we were taught the following: "PN junctions will NEVER EVER fail in theory, HOWEVER due to manufacturing flaws and inconsistancies which are inevitable, they are always the FIRST things to go!" Now with that said: It doesn't have to be your power adapter that has failed. It could be the fuse that your power adapter feeds, the jack connections inside the computer, or the reverse polarity diode that the power adapter feeds. If it is that latter, then the power adapter is likely bad as well, usually when the reverse polarity diode shorts, it takes the power source with it. However, if your 'puter still works on battery power, I think it's likely not the diode. If it is the power adapter, several things could have caused it to go depending on where you are, what type of source wiring you have, building maintenance, etc...: 1) Pure dumb luck...bad pn junction (transistor / microchip) inside the power adapter. 2) Power surge from power source (RMS power in Iraq is horrible--I'm waiting for my laptop to blow up in my face!) 3) Poor grounding in the building's wiring system (In Iraq, everything was expedient, and NOTHING is grounded out here--NOTHING, people are getting killed in the showers). (Had a lady in a mobile home next to mine in North Carlolina a couple of decades ago--her trailor wasn't grounded properly, kept blowing her VCR...the only thing that went, but her VCR didn't like her moblile home, so she gave it to me after the 5th timeof me fixingit!) 4) Improper care / abuse. Getting moisture around it or the 'puter, causing current draws beyond what it is capable of supporting. 5) 'Puter with a bad circuit that works, but is drawing slightly too much current, which in turns over works the adapter--'puter will go out soon in this case. Also, this is a one in a million event, but it could still happen. I doubt this is the case, and as such if it were the case, would be the last thing anyone thought of, and would take longer to diagnose due to that. 6) Well, that's about all. Now, if you're going to try to use these for troubleshooting guides, don't. The best T.S. Guide would be (load)test the output of the adapter. If its truely dead, replace or fix it. If not, have the computer looked at.

Not an easy fix if you don't know discrete components or know how or have the equipment to replace it with. Fuses also generally go for a reason...not always, but generally. If there is a bad fuse, you might have a bad power supply. Sorry for the bad omen here, but that's the way I'm seeing this from here. Hope this at least helps you make a sound decision.

If you go to tools, Internet Options, Security tab, Trusted sites, you can ADD a site that (IF I'm correct) will bypass the security check that was stopping it because you've told the system that you trust this site. In the drill down: https://www.courses.cnet.navy.mil/StudentFunctions/Login.htm, it ges past the https://www.courses.cnet.navy.mil which it didn't use to do, but it gets hung up at the former now. When I try to add the former, it says that this site is already in the trusted list. Looks like you've got it covered. I would try re-seating the memory (taking it out and putting it back in) and pay close attention to how it goes in. ALSO, with one hand, be sure to touch the bare metal frame of the PC the entire time you touch any circuit card assembly (to include your memory sticks) to reduce the chances of static electrity damage to the chips themselves. If that doesn't work, try using the onboard video, and removing the geforce to see if that might have caused a problem (I doubt it, but dumber things have happened). After that, its going to take someone with more G-2 than I have.

Took case off of W series emachines (2005) w 250Watt powersupply and tested on/off button - was ok. removed power supply and found small silver cover blown off capacitor...burn marks arounf the center of the power supply board. Might just buy a replacement power supply for $35.00 and see what happens. If there is a class action count me in please. I have a second e machines but it will undoubtably be my last if the bad power supply has taken out the mother board. E machines has an obligation to let all us registered customers know when a problem like this exists so we can make the decisiion to proactively replace the power supply beofre failure or take our chances. I've actually found AMD to be more reliable for me than anything I owned by Intel. Whenever I shop for a new computer, I always opt for AMD, or install it myself afterwards. I do a lot more than AIM and Facebook on my current setup, and have never been let down. I actually have a family member who works at Intel, but I'm still content to stick with my AMD. ojdidit84 is quite right about the marketing. It doesn't matter how good your product is if your people don't know how to sell.

Just wanted to mention that there are a lot of features of MagicJack that will NOT work on Mac. You can not add contacts, or see recent calls or switch to a headphone set. The Dial Pad is different from the one you see above, in XP has a lot of other features. I've also had problems dialing from an actual phone. From my Mac I can only dial from their pad. Also worth noting Verizon blocks some calls, so some numbers can not be called from Magicjack. I still like the service because I use it for travel, but those are things worth knowing...

Cyrix 6x86MZ PR166+ -> I wanted to buy Intel Pentium 200Mhz OC' to 233Mhz; but didn't have the money. AMD K2-450Mhz -> I was tempted to buy Intel Celeron 266Mhz; but didn't because of the total cost including a 440BX. AMD Duron 1200Mhz AMD AthlonXP 1700+ OC' to 1826Mhz (Throughbred-Socket A) AMD Athlon64 2800+ OC' to 2250Mhz (New Castle-Socket 754) AMD Athlon64 X2 4400+ OC' to 3002Mhz (Brisbane-Socket AM2) Seeking the value is more obvious on the video cards I used. Tseng ET6000 (This and Matrox offered the best 2D.) Interesting post Rick. Some things that I would point out... 1) I don't think that most people are interested in a company's financial position. If the processor works then it works, end of story. It's not like AMD's stock price affects how well their Phenoms work. Something like selling off a fab could possibly have an effect, but until I see any evidence of that it's not something that I'd be worried about. As for AMD lowering quality standards as a result of monetary problems (see first article, "fringe parts that is close to tolerance...") that is troubling but I don't think this is affecting established processors. It might affect cutting edge stuff that just has to get out the door, but if you are buying a value machine I think your are OK. 2) While I'll take AMD's word on the pricing (they wouldn't lie about that) I think their best case is made in the value segment, such as 780G and Puma notebooks. This is in a price range where people don't really care about that hardware they have so long as it runs. We have seen solid performance from their integrated graphics solutions. 790GX has done better than expected, but like you said, the gaming segment is not one whee value plays as large a role, especially when you are dropping over $500 on video cards. 3) Also: QX965= $999. X4 9950 = $289. so that comparison is flawed no matter how you look at it. Chip for chip I don't think anyone at AMD is claiming that their processors are outperforming Intel's. They have moved to a platform approach, which may not be very satisfying for us enthusiasts, but makes sense for a lot of people. Even so, with a Q6600 at $189 right now and the Q9400 at $274 Intel has some more reasonably priced offerings.

I'm using a HTC 6800 with Windows 6.1, and I installed Wisbar Advance, Wisbar Advance Desktop, and the two iphone theme files. After downloading and running the app, I only can see the iphone theme for the top and bottom bar, but the main "theme" which is the fish scene, doesn't show up...just my regular screen. Their customer service told me that the problem is the Wisbar Advance Desktop not loading the theme right, but I didn't get a solution from the developer's at Wisbar either. Could ANYONE please help, lol. I'm at my wits end. Thanks, Steve.

They are going to correct the title of the video, and they said they would be sending me the identical machine to their video, Phenom X4 9950 + two ATI Radeon 4870s to verify the claims made in their videos, specifically 160% faster graphics (compared to a single ATI Radeon), ability to do 2560 x 1600 at 60fps or greater, and I'll put their equipment up side-by-side with the equivalent high-end Intel machine (as stated in the video) to see if there are any noticeable differences. I want to thank AMD for their quick response in addressing the misleading error in the title of the video, and for agreeing to send me their equipment.

Personally, I've never had any problems with an AMD system and I've been building AMD pc's since my first Athlon XP 1800+ back in 2004. I currently have an AMD Phenom 9850BE OC'd to 3GHz on air @ only 1.3675 volts on an Asus M3A32-MVP. A fully AMD based system. It runs perfectly fine and I have no lag on my system nor do I have any issues with Vista or my computer crashing. I've never had a computer crash on me. I honestly don't know what people do to their computers for them to crash all the time. Now, I'm not a nay-sayer of Intel. I actually have a core2 laptop from IBuyPower.com and it works great. I agree with number 7 that AMD needs to get to these vendors and salesmen and teach them how to sell their product correctly. Even back when AMD processors were outperforming Intel before Core2, Intel still sold more because they invested a good amount of money into marketing. Who doesn't remember the Blue Man Group Intel commercials? Good marketing goes a long way. And I think that saying you don't feel safe putting and AMD chip in your pc is a little far-fetched. Oh, and a 2.6GHz pc whether it be AMD or Intel is now a low-end computer unless the rest of the hardware doesn't match up to the cpu. Yes, AMD is hemmoraging money out of every asset that they have but a lot of loss of business for them has also come from unfair competition from Intel that has recently come to light in the past few months and the lengths they went to to keep AMD down as in shipping software to crash AMD systems and trying to by out companys to deny AMD any business at all in many countries. All that aside, I've never never had any problem with my AMD system and I'm a gamer but I also don't need 160fps in any game. Intel got it right with the Core2 and now Nahelem is on its way and is supposed to be even more potent so we should wait and see what AMD can do with its 45nm process. At the moment yes, Intel is on top as far as the high end/high performance in which AMD really doesn't exist at the moment but as far as the mid to low range performance per dollar, AMD is perfectly fine. Just think, if AMD does go under which hopefully it won't, we'll be looking at paying outrages prices for Intel technology because with no competitor, the prices will go through the ceiling. And just because your motherboard craps out on you does that mean that the AMD hardware is faulty? And the fact that your notebook take a lickin' and keeps on tickin has naught to do with it being Intel based. It has to do with the good build quality of the laptop, its materials, and other components including the motherboard. If you were to take that same notebook that you have with AMD components, you would more than likely have the same result in durability. It has nothing to do with what cpu it uses. And crashes aren't always attributed to hardware. Anyway, I'm rambling but I made my point. It just seems that on all of these sites reviewing AMD cpu's, they always come up with some bogus garbage like how they could only overclock the cpu that I have to 2.7 @ 1.4 volts @ xbit labs and you've seen my numbers up top. A little more research needs to be done with these labs before writing these articles. I understand that its an opinion but a lot of what was said just didn't add up to me because I run my full AMD system with no problems at all.

I'd have to say that when people go out to buy a computer, whether the company is losing money doesn't matter in the slightest bit. All they care about is if its going to work and if it's going to last. And it's also true that the 9650 should perform better than the 9950 since it is on a 45nm process while AMD is on a 65nm process. Also, in the video, they did show what hardware was used at the end of the video so it clearly shows that they weren't X3 and DUO. Gamers are only a small portion of the market and a large portion of them are budget gamers. But hey, it's clear where you loyalty lies and shows in the articles so it's like talking to a brick wall. As there is really no high end for AMD as of yet, in my opinion, in the low to mid range they still perform well especially in comparison with similarly priced cpu's and platforms. We'll just have to see what they can come up with on the 45nm front as well as the core i7. As far as AMD, there's nothing wrong with being second and we do still need competition so we don't see prices shoot through the roof like it most likely would with no competition around. Even if they are the #1 performer at the moment, we still need AMD for our sake even if you're not a supporter of their products.

I learned to play real piano on the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) using the Miracle Piano, an 8-note polyphonic, touch sensitive full-size 5+ octave keyboard with a sustain "pedal", pre general midi instrument sounds and drums, and both NES and MIDI connectors. (Later, there was a PC version.) It combined real lessons, exercises based on my performance in the current lesson, and a few games that cemented rhythm and note-reading skills. THAT was a useful Nintendo product. Yamaha made a wonderful plastic sax that could use recorder/flute fingerings and had MIDI around the same time. That was in the very early 90s. It's 2008 and this is what's being offered? I hope Wii Music at least teaches rhythm. Then again, I scoffed at the Guitar Hero controller when I first saw it sitting on the Best Buy floor before the game demos were set up.

Cool, but it does NOT support satellite or any external cable box. All of the HD TiVos have neither A/V inputs nor IRBlaster/serial channel changing outputs to support other sources. The new simultaneously-announced DirecTV (DirecTiVo again?) satellite box will be capacity-upgradeable by 3rd parties. Perhaps it is still possible to do a timed recording on an analog channel (3/4) in standard definition from the antenna out of a satellite box, but that's it. Satellite boxes, AFAIK, can't output over-the-air or cable digital formats. I have a Series 1 Philips and I almost took the plunge for an HD unit when I was going to be gone for the second half of the olympics but held off. I use Weeknees for my upgrades but am glad to have this option. It'll be $350 extra for the 1TB disk, THX certification (might have only required their payment) and backlit remote. (I think I had a $50 rebate for a while; maybe not).

There is still a good percentage of Americans who don't even have broadband let alone a fast enough connection to download these movies. The people are going to say flash drives. Sure, if 50GB flash drives (or even 25GB at a minimum) costed 10 cents to make. Just the materials would cost more than 10 cents. I cannot see Blu-ray dying in this generation of media formats. I can see that this may be our last disk media. The successor to Blu-ray will probably be flash drives or holographic storage, but this is probably going to be at least 10 years away.

All this pointless discussion about who is better than who based on the computer and software you use is just stupid. I know true Apple-heads can be very condescending to members of the 90+% crowd - I used to work for one. But when did personal preference become a standard for judging the value of one's intelligence over another's? So many ideaologies exist today, each with its own convincing arguments. The truth is that each OS has its strong point and being married to one over the other without considering the fact that it might have some flaws that other OSes don't have is missing the whole point of being in IT or design or whatever. You can't have such an open mind that your brains fall out so to speak, but I know in my job I have to be ready to change if something better comes down the pike. Or if something already is better, I need to be able to recognize that and not be blindly biased based on being tied to a specific user group or software just because I want to be part of the 'in' crowd. To answer your original question: any not-geek presented with one. It doesn't matter if the thousands or maybe even tens of thousands geeks in the world went and bought an Intel one because they can get a frame or two better performance in game XX. What matters are the millions of "normal" people who walk into a store to get "a computer". What a normal person needs is a computer for websurfing and sometimes gaming. And basically whatever you carry out of a store costing over $200 will do websurfing and over $500 will do gaming. That is it. If it is absolutely imperative to get 168 frames (when 30 is sufficient) instead of 160 when playing, then yes, you need to turn to a geek and buy something specific. But in any other case you simply don't need to know what is under the hood. And what AMD needs are sales persons willing to sale their gear and not just the competitor and marketing. Sure, it's easier when everyone is polluted with Core this and Core that to just go along with that. People need to understand "the other" brand is just as good - and thanks to ATI gear, in many cases better. But, I live in Finland where people don't get millions by suing businesses for selling them hot coffee, so this may be a bit too radical for US folks. I agree with RickGeek. Just try doing some multitasking or open some heavy programs on 2 computers 1 with AMD and the other with Intel processor, with the same specs and you'll see the difference. AMD might claim that their processors are faster, but in no way they have the stability and multitasking that Intel processors offer.

RG, you sound like me 2+ years ago. Back when folks were accusing me of being a raving Intel fanboy. times change BTW, I'm also writing this on my old single core decrepid AMD FX-57 system. AMD has been in a death spiral for the last 2 years, loosing $100's of millions per quarter for the last 8-9 quarters in a row. They haven't built a new fab in 3-4 years. Outsorcing their silicon really hasn't helped them much. 2007 profit margin was a whopping -55%, which means they lost $1.55 for every $1.00 they made. Still better then theover -90% profit margin they had in 2006. God knows how they intend to pay off the >$5B they shelled out for ATI. They've restructured that debt once already, so they're not going to be able to do that again. Their current market cap is ~$3.5,so if they sold EVERYTHING it's likely they still couldn't pay of their debts. The LARGE numbers are so remarkably negative what we should really be talking about here is how exactly is AMD even keeping the lights on? Where is the money coming from for them to keep operating? Could you loose 55 cents on every dollar and 1/3 of your networth per year for 2-3 years in a row and still pay your bills? Also, If you were Dell or HP would you enter into any long term contracts with AMD, knowing they may go bankrupt in any given quarter? I hear HP's server group is, but I think they are nuts and someone is letting their anti-Intel bias make a really questionable business decision. I thought we'd see AMD cease to exist in 2007, now we're sneaking up on 2009 and they are still going, bleeding every step of the way, but still going. I find this remarkable, and very interesting, how are they doing it? I'd be interested in knowing how you think they are doing this in light of their finacial numbers. I'd just don't see how they can loose that much for that long and still be in business, obviously I'm missing something pretty significant.

Half ass trained bestbuy sales people who will claim that the intel dual cores are a gazillion times faster for everything. Because God knows that for your facebook and aim usage, an intel dual core is gonna rock an amd dual core -_- How is AMD going to recover? If they can squeeze out more money I'd say train the people who actually sell their product to plug their product. The average computer consumer will believe what the "trained computer specialist" at their local electronics store is going to tell them. So you've got to make sure that "specialist" says your name or you lose.

It's funny because I was just talking about this with my school's computer programming director. He was all excited because his wife is getting him an Asus eeepc or whatever, and he already has a decently high end HP tablet. And he is just so into the fact that it's tiny and he can just slip it in his bag with such little weight. he seems convinced that it'll make taking notes, blogging, and instant messaging so much easier for him. But from my perspective, the damn things got a battery life of 3 hours, that wouldn't even last through one of my night classes. How is that supposed to be convenient? Sure 8 cell batteries are gonna be developed for it and that might make a difference to me, but as of right now, I don't understand the Netbook craze.

I just got my wife an Acer Aspire One (WinXP, 1GB ram, 120GB hd). Not only does she love it, she carries it everwhere with her in her (abliet oversized) purse! This Dell and the Acer Aspire One and all of the other computers have a very good nitch market. I am going to get myself one as a fantasy football player and for going over to friends' houses etc. They are prices perfectly and perform above expectation. I am also a major Google user (yes, I support the evil empire) and these laptops are great to use with Chrome and all of the Google apps. (Docs, calendar, gmail, etc.)

I build bespoke PC's for business/personal, and all are AMD based. Why? Because most want value for money, not ultimate performance. In my experience, motherboards for AMD are cheaper and/or have more features than ones for Intel (e.g. RAID or decent graphics on newer AMD boards). This has to be factored in overall build cost. However, on the laptop front, Intel based ones have the market at the moment.

I agree with OpenSauce that AMD processors are a good choice for mid-range systems. AMD definitely has the advantage in price/performance. If performance is more of a concern and price is less important, then you should go with Intel. In my experience, both AMD and Intel processors are stable and reliable. I don't have any concerns about this, and I haven't encountered any "fringe parts" with heat or other problems (aside from known bugs such as TLB). Of course, it's always a good idea to avoid low-end motherboards regardless of the processor. For example, many of the 780G motherboards are intended strictly for low-end systems and are unsuitable even for the mid-range. 790GX boards are a much better choice. As to the business end, it's possible AMD will go bankrupt and be acquired, though this seems increasingly unlikely. There's an excellent chance that AMD will merge or be acquired even if they remain solvent, due to general consolidation in the industry. I don't see either of these possibilities as a problem, since an acquirer would almost certainly continue producing processors. The brand name doesn't matter. I do wish AMD had the cash to make a few strategic acquisitions, though. For example, I'd like to see them pick up a physics solution.

Ok, I want to give a fair review here. I've done a lot of research and spent some serious time with this new phone. I bought the LG Rumor because it had the keyboard and I am glad I did. It is so much easier to type on the keyboard than the numeric keypad! And I can slide the phone open and closed at any time without effecting what I'm doing. That means I can go back and forth without problems and it instantly changes the display into landscape and back. And it's probably one of the least expensive QWERTY keyboard phones avaliable. I found some serious drawbacks and some extremely nice work-arounds. 1) Sprint makes you pay for wallpapers (they call them screen savers - which they are not - nevertheless) and ringtones. You can't stick your own in there - not even with a USB cable. And I don't mean just pay for them, you have to pay several dollars for a picture or a 10 second ringtone! And their web interface to buy them is slow and buggy (many links just don't work). I found a solution to this irritation. Go to mobile17.com and upload your own pictures (jpg or gif files at 176x220 resolution) and ringtones (wave files or midi files) into your phone for free. I did it and it worked great. Even cooler, I made some really great animated wallpapers with my name for my phone for free at reddodo.com and it looks so professional. Just go with the default size and use mobile17.com to upload the animated gif files to your phone. Another solution was to use Windows Movie Maker and ad pictures, videos, and sounds and then upload them to the Micro-SD card (or use a USB cable). You can choose video's as a ringtone or wallpaper but not images, mp3 files, or midi. As a side note, it only has 16 meg on the phone so be careful. I loaded mine up so I have 1 meg left free and it's plenty. Go to "My Content", "", "Memory Status" to see how much memory you've used. 2) It does not come with a memory card or USB cable. You'll want to purchase a 2 gig (I was told that 4 gig works but is much slower) MicroSD card for under $10. Patriot is a good brand and has worked well for me. For the USB cable, do a Google search for "lg rumor usb cable" (without the quotes of course). Also, both the MicroSD card and USB cable are sold in stores if you don't want to wait. 3) The headphone jack is mono and all music plays only mono. I wouldn't recommend it for a music player. Lectures or audio books work great. I will say that the speaker isn't too bad and Sprint is offering "Sprint Music Center" application for free and it gives you 10 commercial free radio stations on your phone. That's actually pretty cool. (Note, you'll have to download it from "Get New Applications" using your phone and make sure it's still free.) 4) If you want to back up your contacts, you have to pay Sprint $10 a month for their contacts backup plan. What a joke. Instead, I use "DataPilot Software" from DataPilot.com (it's also sold here on Amazon.com) to back up my contacts. A side benefit is that it allows me to get my laptop on the internet (even though it's very slow) remotely using that USB cable. I just got the software but they have a package that includes the USB cable. Be aware that it didn't work for me (AT ALL) until I did the automatic update. I guess they fixed it recently. 5) GPS has issues. The "Sprint Navigation" software is SLOW. When I say slow... I mean slow enough to cause issues. Sometimes, it's so slow, it's just unusable... and for an additional $10 a month, it's a shame. Plus, sometimes the GPS doesn't work at all and I'm in a huge city. When it works, it's awesome. 6) The picture quality isn't so great because you can't adjust the jpg compression and there's no flash so it really needs a lot of lighting. No work-a-round for this one. Ok... now the good stuff: Loopt is a cool little application that comes free and it allows you to use the GPS. It doesn't give directions but I made a Favorite to maps.google.com and it works well. The games are alright... a little pricey for cell games at $5-$7 a pop. I would never "rent" them by month and that seems to be the default - be careful about this when purchasing. I would HIGHLY recommend downloading the game "Orcs & Elves" by ID Software. It's like a little cell phone version of World of Warcraft (it also has a cheat code - press 3666 while in the menu). Bejeweled and SimCity are pretty slick too and will provide hours of entertainment. I really like that my phone checks my Google mail, Hotmail, Yahoo mail, and my POP work mail for me. I set all of them up in there. Nice. And it also has Yahoo chat, Microsoft instant messenger, and AOL instant messenger built in. It's easy to navigate through menus while you are already talking on the phone. That's nice when you first get the phone and can't remember the number. lol Last bit of advice, you can reconfigure what the main directional keys do and I recommend changing them to what you use. I have mine set up for Games, Voice Memos, Scheduler (built in calendar), and the calculator (which looks nice). Just go to "Settings/Tools" -> "Settings" -> "More..." -> "Navigation Keys" to change it. Oh... I almost forgot... pick up a cigarette lighter charger so you can charge your phone in the car. You'll be glad you did. I, also, got protective film for my screen and you can't tell it's there. I really love this phone. The battery is lasting a very long time for me, the sound is clear, and the price is right.

I just graduated from college and the lap top is built into the tuition. That said, I have none of the program disks, so Windows XP, all the Adobe programs, and all of that were owned by the university. This means if I wipe the hard drive, then I'll lose all software and programs. I can't start windows in a regular mode. I have Windows XP and an IBM think pad. Everytime I start it up, it gets through most of the boot up process and then a blue screen appears saying that a problem has been found and windows is being shut down to avoid damage to the computer. It begins a physical memory dump that goes for 100 units and then the computer restarts. I want to avoid wiping the hard drive at all costs. Could someone please direct me in the right direction? We looked at 16 key metrics this year as our benchmarks, including: boot time, IE launch time, install time, uninstall time, shutdown time, suspend time, resume time, file copy time, HTTP download time, scan time, etc. These were in addition to the metrics we looked at that have perceived impact from the users perspective, including UI launch time, size of files on disk, amount of memory consumed, number of registry keys used, etc. I think users should look at performance testing from real-world 3rd party entities. I would be delighted if you tested our products and reported your findings. I would also note that our goal this year was that any user installing our product would immediately be able to see the difference in our product performance. This was no easy feat, but our engineers really delivered. I think if you install it, and if any user installs it, they should be able to see the progress that we have made. With my TiVo and cable DVR, I am always free to go out at night. I'm also always able to take a phone call. TV used to keep me home when live friends were out there. I can capture some series I think I don't want to miss, and if they accumulate for a year or two (I have 344 basic hours on the TiVo) without being watched, I can release them. It has let me learn to value people over programs. I do try to watch relevant commercials unless I'm in a serious hurry. I hate the cost of my cell phone and the challenge of getting the headset on so that I don't experience the intense eye pain and headache caused by holding my CDMA phone to my head. I envy those people who don't watch any TV. For me, a DVR is the next best thing. (And it sure beats the the hundreds of unwatched VHS cassettes I found I had when I had to move 5 years ago.) My computer-based attempts have been more time-consuming than VHS. I have all the parts for high def MythTV (Mythbuntu) so I'll see if I can save some cable money since most of my favorite shows are on network TV. Aligning the antenna could put the kabosh on that. (How will people survive HDTV with having to change their indoor antenna for every channel?) All I really need is Boston Legal. (and damn RCN cable for encoding over-the-air HD). With the cell phone paling in sound quality to a land line, I'm surprised it counts as indespensible "HOUSEHOLD" technology; but I do understand. BTW, I tried the ThinkGeek wired classic handset (like a phone from the 1960s) and its microphone quality was poor.

Actually, Opera lets you pick up to 9 sites as your "quick-start sites"; they are picked by the user rather than being automatically determined based on usage. I'll give Chrome a spin when it's ready for Mac or Linux. I'm still trying to figure out why companies can't put programs out for all platforms at the same time.

Personally I'm sticking with Firefox 3.0 as my primary browser b/c I need the plugins. Plus I've used Ff for years (since before it was called Firefox) and it has always gotten the job done. Chrome is not my secondary browser, which is makes sense for me b/c I need to have another browser open so I can keep tabs on two gmail accounts. Chrome is crazy fast on gmail, even on my old beater of a PC.

Madmech... Firefox and Opera have had spellcheckers for a long time. Firefox 3 is built in and automatic. I believe Safari uses the Mac system-wide spell checker. I just used it now! Chrome looks nice but I don't really see any real improvements over Firefox or Opera. Certainly nothing that will usher in a new era in browsers as per one poster here!

Chrome is fast, renders pretty much like firefox, and may very well end up replacing firefox as my primary surfing browser. For development, it's hard to beat firefox with it's plugins, like web dev or firebug. But for normal browsing, Chrome's lightning fast speed is worthwhile. Running if for about 24 hours now with no crashes, and haven't happened across any incompatibility issues.

I've found with my Palm TX, after 9 years of other Palms that I still use with no problem, that after an hour of use, the room is consistently a blur for a good 5-10 minutes after I put the TX down. It's scary. If these glasses stop that from happening, I'll be their biggest promoter.

When you pay for something as a package deal, then if you are going to not want a part of the package either negoatiate the deal without that part before handing over the money OR put up with it. I joined just to write this so, here it goes. Don't listen to the post above. Do not, DO NOT, download more than 1 antivirus program. Excluding firewall programs. They will conflict with eachother and cause many problems. I've used all of these anti-viruses except NOD32. For a good free anti-virus both Avast! and Avira are good. They've caught every virus that's ever gotten on my computer. For paid, I'd have to go with Kaspersky. It's got a very high detection rate, low false posotive detection rate and doesn't hog your resources. At the moment I'm using Avast! Proffesional. I was satisfied with it but lately it's been popping up these annoying windows asking to allow or deny things that I've been using for months now. It's not too bad on hogging resources. I tried BitDefender on my desktop but then for some reason it wouldn't delete. And other antivirus programs wouldn't run because it was technically still installed. I had to reformat my whole computer. And on a personal note I hate Norton. So many things have gotten past it and it hogs all your resources. So all-in-all I'd go with Kaspersky.

Recently my Dell 8300 would not display anything when booting up. The monitor appeared to be in hibernate mode with the amber light on. After unplugging the monitor and seeing that the monitor was fine, Dell suggested it was my video card. I installed a new video card and my computer popped up with some errors. Dell had me reinstall XP. That go me up and running. After re-installing XP, there were many updates to download. Last night I got the the last of them, SP3. This morning, I'm back to my initial problem: a monitor stuck in hibernate mode. Does anyone know if this is a problem with SP3? Also, how do I get something to show up on my screen so I can implement any fix?

My son is away at college for the first time and was on AIM today. He was invited to a 'party' and as soon as he joined, someone took control of his computer. He's on the university system so it's not easy to reach someone today and likely tomorrow to help. This person said he could see all his files and then took control of one of his Microsoft XBox accounts and changed the user name. (This was reported to Microsoft already). How do we stop this? Can he plug into another person's outlet and avoid this person accessing his computer (it would be another IP address)? There is now another person who has jumped in the fray and both their screen names are: xsnayke and ygbrenker. Thefirst is the hacker, the second is just harrassing. I am looking for Hollywood, if you are still around and canhelp. I also printedthe directions for downloading some softwareshown in this string aswell as thehelp from the engineer.

That is not a stupid question but there are other questions you might want to consider over the Sony / Cannon choice. I personally like Cannon since they don't use Sony's proprietary memory sticks but instead use the more common SD cards or SDHC cards. I have also heard they are more reliable than Sony. A better question for you to consider is what type of camera do you need? DSLR, compact, ultra compact. I had a Cannon SD1000 which was very small and fit in my pocket. It took great shots and the video quality was close to a friends camcorder although with smaller resolution. I lost that in a kayak accident and bought a Cannon A650IS which can be bought for just over $300. It was a larger camera which no longer fit in my pocket but it had 12 megapixels and still took great video. It used four AA batteries and I loved it but it also became a victim of another kayak incident. To replace it I went down to the Cannon A590IS for about $138. It only had two batteries and less megapixels and the optical zoom was not as good as the 650. It tends to lose pictures or videos and I assume it is because of the lower power with only two AA batteries. I really liked the SD1000 and I really liked the A650IS even though it was big. The A590IS I would not reccomend to anyone. I think the best choice out there would be the Cannon SD1100 - It has even better features than the SD1000 that I liked plus it is so easy to carry. I also bought the Ezonics SD Pro and some extra SD cards to make it easier to download and share pics. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820402003 Using this allows you to save battery life for taking pictures instead of wasting it to download pics. It is very convenient although it is cheaply built. The metal side fell off mine but it still works fine and I can't live without it. I learned a long time ago that anything with interchangeable lens is a fast road to the poorhouse. (Plus most of them don't take videos)

I was going to look for drivers with video drivers being the most frequent cause of the issue you have. Also - Does this problem happen more often when the machine is warm? If so just blow out any dust and try to keep the machine in a cooler location for operation. Update at least the graphics drivers and then whateverother driversyou find thatare out of date.

Hi, I am facing a problem with my diamond, and I am curious if anyone else has faced this problem. When I am attending a call, I like to be able to access other features, like sms, contacts, notes, documents etc. And my husband's HTC Touch lets him do that soooo easily. But my backlight keeps going off, more than that, the touch feature gets turned off, and I have to either insert/remove the stylus, or I have to press the power button to get the control back on my screen before I can proceed. And that too lasts for barely 5-10 seconds, and I have to repeat this everytime, throughout the call... Has anyone else faced this problem, else I need to talk to my retailer about this... Also, the speaker volume is really low isn't it? Especially compared to Nokia phones, tho the HTC touch is also soooo much better!!! Appreciate any help on this guys... Shefali.

-If it was a faulty CPU (Central Processing Unit), the computer would turn on but would have no display. -If the ram (random access memory) was faulty, the computer would sound an alarm. -If the hdd (hard disk drive) was faulty, the computer would say that you have an invalid system disk (hard drive) and ask you to replace the disk. So if the power supply has been replaced, it would most likely be the power switch is loose or unplugged. possibly it has accidentally been unplugged when someone was doing some maintenance work on the pc (personal computer) I recommend that you pick up a screw driver, and connect the power switch pins on your motherboard with you're metal screw driver.

If the sound you are hearing is like an alarm sound, it means no ram or faulty ram. but if not it could be that your cpu has blown up. Either caused by the heatsink fan not touching the cpu or the cpu fan is not plugged in-this will cause the cpu to blow up. YOU CAN RECOVER EVERYTHING FROM THE HARD DRIVE DISK ACCEPT PROGGRAMMS AND WINDOWS. -1-REMOVE THE HARD DRIVE FROM THE COMPUTER AND SET THE JUMPER SETTING ON THE BACK OF THE HARD DRIVE TO SLAVE. -2-OPEN UP A SECOND COMPUTER AND CONNECT THE CABLES TO THE HARD DRIVE LIKE HOW IT WAS CONNECTED ON THE FAULTY COMPUTER. -3-TURN ON THE SECOND COMPUTER AND GO TO MY COMPUTER (if it is windows xp or windows 2000 the computer should automaticly detect the hdd) THE HARD DRIVE SHOULD BE SHOWN AS (E:) you sould be able to recover info from there. DONT BOTHER REPLACEING THE CPU BECAUSE IT IS NOT WORTH IT hope this helps...

Now, they're getting greedy, crying that 2nd hand sales taking away from their already made profits.... I did a disk scan and it indicates some drivers might be missing, insert the XP disk. Then I am told that disk older than the version installed. I have found that when a computer won't turn on, it is usually because of a bad cpu or motherboard. If you want to tackle replacing your motherboard, check out http://www.geeks.com for low priced cpu/motherboards/repair kits/bare-bone systems. Remember to keep yourself grounded, as many components are very sensitive to static electricity. And remember that wrist straps which ground you to the computer case only work if the case itself is grounded (plugged into the wall). You also have to make sure that all of your components and connectors will fit the new motherboard. Check out http://computershopper.com/howto/replace-your-motherboard-200707 for a good discussion of issues related to motherboard replacement. Ideally, just take your computer to a local computer repair shop. Their work is warrantied and it would be a lot faster. Plus, they should be able to diagnose exactly what the problem is.
